About the Immigrant Council of Ireland
The Immigrant Council of Ireland is an independent human rights organisation. The ICI advocates for the rights of immigrants and their families, and acts as a catalyst for public debate and policy change.
Overview of the Programme
The new programme – ‘Ambassadors for Change’ – will be run by young people, for young people. Under the programme, volunteers aged 18 to 30 – who are, themselves, from migrant backgrounds – will be trained as ‘ambassadors’ and will then be matched with participating secondary schools. In these schools, they will be available to provide workshops and informal advice, guidance and support to pupils from migrant backgrounds – and to encourage them to do well, both in an academic and a social context.
Responsibilities
- Participate in preliminary and continued training opportunities to improve your leadership skills and knowledge of issues that affect migrant students in Ireland
- Inspire the migrant communities in Dublin City
- Serve as role models to migrant pupils in secondary schools
- Provide resources that aid student success in schools
- Serve as an example for migrant student success within the greater Dublin community
Qualifications (some of the requirements)
- Be of migrant background
- Be over 18 years of age
- Familiar with the Irish Education system (for example: having done part of their secondary school education in Ireland)
- Passionate about migrant student success in Ireland
- Ability to work well in group settings
- Flexible schedule
- Garda vetted (safeguarding trust)
Duties
- Attend introductory trainings over five Saturdays (May – June 2012)
- Communicate effectively with local schools to arrange workshops
- Lead workshops
- Promote and distribute resources in the schools
- Identify, with support from other stakeholders, potential next steps
- Fill out reflections after each workshop
- Attend follow-up training sessions
- Attend follow-up sessions and evaluation
Duration of the programme
- April 2012 – April 2013
Monthly commitment
- 8-10 hours per month

- September 2012 – June 2013 (mentoring in participating schools)
- May – July 2013 - Evaluation
