International Migrants Day 2023
To mark International Migrants Day, we in the Immigrant Council of Ireland would like to thank all of Ireland's migrant communities for the contribution they have made to the enrichment of Irish life.
Today, in the Convention Center in Dublin, a Citizenship Ceremony is being held to celebrate some of our newest citizens. At each of these ceremonies, we have the opportunity to reflect on the often difficult journey many people from a migrant background have made to be where they are today. They have left home, often against their will, travelled through difficult routes and settled in a new country far away. They have striven to pass through the Irish immigration system, to gain security, to study or work, and to see their children settled and in school. They have worried, they have celebrated, and they have persevered.
Along this journey, they likely have received support from Irish communities and allies – whether a teacher in school, a new employer, a neighbour, a legal representative or just a friend. They have received a welcome when they needed it, and in turn, give back to their community in whatever way they could. We also thank and acknowledge the wider Irish community for building this infrastructure of welcome, and for imbuing it with real Irish values such as equality, compassion, empathy and positive action.
Ireland is a country of migration, whether it is those here seeking new lives abroad or those who come here in search of a fresh start. Those who seek to divide us will not succeed, and those who seek to erode this welcome will find that task impossible.
On International Migrants Day we offer our gratitude to all who make Ireland a better place and pledge our continued solidarity and friendship.
