Seanad 2022 By-elections Panel Discussion

03 March 2022
Panel Discussion: Seanad by-election - image of candidates

When: Thursday, 3 March 2022 6.00pm-7.30pm
Where: Zoom

Diversity in politics is essential for a healthy democracy and fair decision-making process. Ireland has one of the most inclusive electoral systems in the world. Every person regardless of their nationality can vote and run in local elections.

Whereas ethnic diversity significantly increased at the local level migrant and ethnic minority communities are still lacking representation at the State level. 1 in 8 of Irish society is a person of a migrant background. That is a significant part of our society without a political representation.

For a number of years, the Immigrant Council of Ireland has been investing time and resources to support diversity in politics, focusing on migrant and ethnic diversity representation. On the occasion of the TCD Seanad by-election 2022 the Immigrant Council is organising a public online panel discussion with candidates who identify as having a migrant background.

As a civil society organisation, the Immigrant Council strictly maintains a non-partisan status, and we are not supporting any particular candidate. The purpose of the event is to discuss and promote diversity in politics.

Chair:

  • Gabija Gataveckaite, News reporter at Irish Independent and Herald

Panellists:

  • Cllr Hazel Chu
  • Ryan Alberto Ó Giobúin
  • Abbas Ali O’Shea
